H16.2: Keratoconjunctivitis
The cornea is located at the front of the eye. It is transparent and curved. The curvature focuses light in the eye. This is vital to be able to see clearly.
The transparent conjunctiva covers the eye and the inside of the eyelids. Along with the tears, the conjunctiva forms a liquid film on the eye. Together, the conjunctiva, the eyelids, and the liquid film on the eye all protect the eye from external agents. The conjunctiva also helps defend against pathogens.
The cornea and conjunctiva in your eye have become inflamed. The cornea and conjunctiva can become inflamed when they are irritated or damaged. This type of inflammation can be painful or cause itching. It may feel as though there is something in one’s eye. The eye may water or excrete pus. It may no longer be possible to open the affected eye properly, and bright light might be hard to tolerate. With conjunctivitis the eye also looks red.
