H11: Other disorders of conjunctiva

H11.3: Conjunctival haemorrhage

The transparent conjunctiva covers the eye and the inside of the eyelids. Along with the tears, the conjunctiva forms a liquid film on the eye. Together, the conjunctiva, the eyelids, and the liquid film on the eye all protect the eye from external agents. The conjunctiva also helps defend against pathogens.

There has been bleeding beneath your conjunctiva. This can happen when one sneezes or bends down, for example, particularly if the blood vessels in the eye are damaged. A high blood pressure often damages the blood vessels, for example. When someone has bleeding beneath the conjunctiva, there are often no symptoms. The bleeding often stops again within 2 weeks.
