H11: Other disorders of conjunctiva
H11.2: Conjunctival scars
The transparent conjunctiva covers the eye and the inside of the eyelids. Along with the tears, the conjunctiva forms a liquid film on the eye. Together, the conjunctiva, the eyelids, and the liquid film on the eye all protect the eye from external agents. The conjunctiva also helps defend against pathogens.
If your conjunctiva have been inflamed for a long time, or it has been injured, the conjunctiva may scar or contract. The conjunctiva sometimes grows into the eyelid. The eyelids are above and below the eye. Helped by the eyelashes, they protect the eye from injury and from drying out. If the eye is changed by scarring, the person is often no longer able to move their eye properly. They then often have vision problems.
The changes to the conjunctiva occur when there is a disorder of the immune system, for example.
