G97.0: Cerebrospinal fluid leak from spinal puncture
The brain and the spinal cord are surrounded by 3 meninges (linings). The outer meninx is the dura mater. A soft meninx is in direct contact with the dura mater on the inside of it. There is an additional soft meninx on the brain and spinal cord. The space between these two soft meninges is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The cerebrospinal fluid cushions the brain and the spinal cord against impact. The cerebrospinal fluid also nourishes the meninges.
The cerebrospinal fluid can provide important information for various illnesses. This is why with these diseases you can carefully prick the subarachnoid space with a needle. You can collect a few drops of the cerebrospinal fluid and test them in a laboratory. As a special needle is usually used, the puncture site often closes up again quickly.
It is possible for some additional cerebrospinal fluid to be lost.
