G90: Disorders of autonomic nervous system
G90.1: Familial dysautonomia [Riley-Day]
Many processes run unconsciously in the body. These include breathing and digestion, for example. The heartbeat or blood pressure are also adjusted independently by the body. These processes are controlled by certain nerves.
If these nerves get damaged, organs such as the heart or intestine may stop working properly. With your disorder, your blood pressure may be too high or too low, for example. You may also have problems eating and with your digestion. You will then not be able to swallow properly or you will need to vomit. Your eyes may be dry and you may sweat excessively. Nerves that you use to feel may also be affected. Then you may be in pain and be unable to feel temperature properly, for example. Other symptoms can occur, too. For example, the spine may curve. The disease is hereditary. Other family members may also be affected.
