G71: Primary disorders of muscles
G71.0: Muscular dystrophy
Muscles are made up of many long cells. These cells form the muscle fibers. With this disorder, muscle cells are destroyed and partly replaced by fat or connective tissue. The disease is hereditary. Other family members may also be affected.
With this disorder, the person has symptoms of varying degrees of severity, depending on which muscles are affected. The symptoms often become more severe over time.
The muscles, for example in the arms, legs and trunk, become weaker. It may also become impossible to move properly as a result. This disorder can also affect other organs. The person may no longer be able to open their eyes properly or find it more difficult to swallow. If the respiratory muscles or the heart muscles are affected then you can be very seriously ill.
