G40-G47: Episodic and paroxysmal disorders
G41: Status epilepticus
Status epilepticus is a serious neurological condition characterized by an ongoing epileptic seizure that lasts for more than five minutes, or multiple seizures within a short period without recovery of full consciousness in between. This condition puts the brain at risk of significant damage. It is caused by a disruption in the brain's electrical activity which can be provoked by factors such as brain injury, stroke, certain medications, or an underlying neurological disorder like epilepsy. Common symptoms include prolonged seizures, involuntary muscle movements, and loss of consciousness. If not managed promptly, status epilepticus can lead to complications like long-term cognitive impairment, permanent brain damage, or even death. Therefore, it is considered a medical emergency that requires immediate intervention.
