G23: Other degenerative diseases of basal ganglia
G23.0: Hallervorden-Spatz disease
The brain is located inside the head. It receives, processes and stores sensory impressions. The brain controls movements and various physical functions.
Generally, with this disorder, a lot of iron accumulates in the brain. Whether the iron deposits are the cause of the symptoms is not yet fully clear. The disorder is particularly affecting areas of the brain that are needed to control movements. This means that muscles cannot be controlled properly and that they cramp up. This might cause involuntary movements. One may also no longer be able to walk or talk properly. Some forms of the disorder can also affect one's mental faculties. There may be other symptoms, too. You may be seriously ill.
The condition is usually inherited. This means that other family members can also be affected.
