F60: Specific personality disorders
F60.3: Emotionally unstable personality disorder
Emotionally unstable personality disorder, often known as borderline personality disorder, is a mental health condition characterized by a pattern of unstable interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affect combined with notable impulsivity. People with this condition often exhibit intense episodes of anger, depression, or anxiety that may last from a few hours to a few days. They may have distinct uncertainty about their self-image, long-term goals, friendships, and values. People with emotionally unstable personality disorder might also exhibit impulsive and risky behaviors, such as unsafe sex, reckless driving, or drug use. These behaviors can contribute to relationship conflicts and instability. Instances of self-harm, such as self-cutting or suicide attempts, tend to occur frequently among affected individuals, often in response to fear of separation or rejection.
