F40-F48: Neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders

F48: Other neurotic disorders

The group of conditions known as Other Neurotic Disorders (code F48) encompasses a varied collection of psychological disorders. Unlike many other mental health disorders, these neurotic disorders are characterized by the presence of distressing symptoms but a lack of abnormalities in thought or behaviors. They often manifest as a chronic and excessive worry or fear about everyday situations, resulting in high stress levels, restlessness, fatigue, and difficulty with concentration. These disorders can occur due to a combination of genetic, environmental, psychological, and developmental factors. Affected individuals may also experience physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomachaches, heart palpitations, and excessive sweating, although these symptoms are often the product of the person's worry rather than a direct result of the disorder itself. Progression of these disorders varies widely depending on the specific type of disorder and the individual's response to stressors. Despite the discomfort it causes, neurotic behavior typically does not interfere with thought processes or a person's ability to function overall.
