F38.1: Other recurrent mood [affective] disorders
Other recurrent mood disorders, classified under the code F38.1, are a subtype of mood disorders characterized by repeated episodes of elevated, expansive, or irritable moods that disrupt a person's daily life. Unlike bipolar disorders, these recurrent mood disorders do not include periods of clinical depression. Symptoms can include excessive enthusiasm or cheerfulness, inflated self-esteem, reduced need for sleep, distractibility, and excessively involved in activities that could lead to harmful consequences. The exact cause is unknown, however, it is believed to be a combination of genetic, biochemical, and environmental factors. Progression of this condition varies from individual to individual, with some people experiencing long periods of stable mood between episodes while others may have frequent mood disturbances. The disorder affects an individual's emotional and, at times, physical well-being and his or her ability to perform daily tasks.
