E87: Other disorders of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance
E87.7: Fluid overload
Various factors affect how much fluid there is in the body. Messenger substances, for example, control how much fluid is excreted with the urine. The minerals in the blood are also linked to the amount of fluid in the body.
Various disorders, for example renal insufficiency, can cause you to have too much fluid in your body. If the kidneys stop working properly and create less urine, they may excrete less fluid. As a result, more fluid remains in the body.
You may also have too much fluid in your body if you drink too much. This is then also known as a water intoxication. Water intoxication can occur if you consume a large amount of low-mineral fluid.
