E73: Lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance is a common digestive disorder where the body is unable to fully digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products. This condition occurs when there is a deficiency of an enzyme called lactase, produced in the small intestine, which is essential to break down lactose into simpler forms that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Symptoms usually occur within a few hours of consuming dairy products and can range from mild to severe, including bloating, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and gas. The severity of symptoms usually depends on the amount of lactose consumed and the amount a person can tolerate. This condition is chronic and usually progresses slowly over time, potentially starting in childhood or adolescence and persisting into adulthood. The digestive system is primarily affected by this condition.
