E71: Disorders of branched-chain amino-acid metabolism and fatty-acid metabolism

E71.1: Other disorders of branched-chain amino-acid metabolism

Amino acids perform many different functions in the body. The body needs amino acids to, for example, produce proteins. Some amino acids have to be consumed via food. Other amino acids can be produced in the body. If certain amino acids are not being processed properly, they can accumulate in the body and damage organs. Various amino acids can be affected. Depending on the disorder, there can be a variety of symptoms.

Some of these conditions are hereditary. If so, other family members may also be affected.
