E55.9: Vitamin D deficiency, unspecified
Vitamin D is important for bone hardness, for example. Calcium and phosphate are stored in the bones by vitamin D. Bone thus hardens. Vitamin D moreover has effects on the intestines, skin or blood cells.
The body can create vitamin D itself. Sunlight is required for that. The intestines, liver and kidneys are involved in creating vitamin D. You can also take vitamin D with food. However, this only makes up a small part of your body’s vitamin D.
If you have insufficient vitamin D in your body, you may have various symptoms. The bones may then be softer and break more quickly. You may also be tired often, feel depressed or have sleep disturbances. Furthermore, you may be more susceptible to inflammations caused by pathogens. A vitamin D deficiency can also cause the muscles to be weaker or to cramp.
