E14: Unspecified diabetes mellitus

E14.1: Unspecified diabetes mellitus with ketoacidosis

Unspecified Diabetes Mellitus with ketoacidosis, often abbreviated as DM, is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition if not promptly recognized and treated. It primarily refers to heightened blood sugar or glucose levels which the body cannot appropriately manage due to insufficient insulin production or ineffective use of insulin. In response to the lack of usable insulin, the body starts breaking down fat as an alternate source of energy, producing ketones as a by-product. Ketoacidosis occurs when the ketones accumulate in the blood, making it excessively acidic. This can lead to various warning signs, such as frequent urination, extreme thirst, high blood sugar levels, high levels of ketones in the urine, fatigue, confusion, and fruit-smelling breath. It is particularly prevalent among individuals with type 1 diabetes but can also affect those with type 2. If left untreated, it can result in severe complications, including coma or death.
