E10: Type 1 diabetes mellitus

E10.3: Type 1 diabetes mellitus with ophthalmic complications

Type 1 diabetes mellitus with ophthalmic complications is a specific condition where an individual's immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, resulting in high blood glucose levels. Over time, consistently high levels of glucose can damage blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the eyes, leading to ophthalmic complications. These can vary widely, and may include diabetic retinopathy, where high blood sugar levels cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina, as well as cataracts, glaucoma, and other vision-related issues. Symptoms can range from mild vision problems to severe sight loss if not detected and managed properly. It is a progressive condition, often developing slowly over many years, which makes regular eye check-ups integral for those with Type 1 diabetes.
