E00-E07: Disorders of thyroid gland
E01: Iodine-deficiency-related thyroid disorders and allied conditions
The group of conditions known as iodine-deficiency-related thyroid disorders and allied conditions generally involve issues with the thyroid gland, a small organ located at the base of the neck. These conditions occur when the body doesn't get enough iodine, a nutrient that the thyroid needs to produce certain crucial hormones. Without sufficient iodine, the thyroid may grow larger in an attempt to obtain more, leading to a condition called goiter. Other problems related to iodine deficiency include hypothyroidism, where the thyroid can't make enough hormones to keep the body running normally, and mental retardation in severe cases. Typical symptoms can include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, depression, and cognitive issues. This group of disorders primarily affects the endocrine system, but the effects can be wide-ranging due to the important role of thyroid hormones in the body.
