E00-E07: Disorders of thyroid gland

E00: Congenital iodine-deficiency syndrome

Congenital iodine-deficiency syndrome is a group of conditions that occur when a person doesn't get enough iodine before birth. Iodine, which we usually get from foods like seafood and dairy, is necessary for the production of thyroid hormones. In the absence of sufficient iodine, the body cannot produce these hormones properly, and this affects growth and brain development. Common symptoms may vary but can include mental and physical developmental delays, decreased muscle tone, dry skin, and enlarged thyroid gland (also known as goiter). Since this syndrome impacts the thyroid at an early developmental stage, its effects are typically life-long and can progressively impact multiple body systems. This condition is not contagious and arises solely due to nutritional inadequacy in the expecting mother's diet.
