D69: Purpura and other haemorrhagic conditions
D69.4: Other primary thrombocytopenia
Primary thrombocytopenia, covered in the ICD-10 under code D69.4, is a medical condition characterized by a lower than normal number of platelets in the blood. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, play a vital role in the process of clot formation to prevent excessive bleeding. This disorder can be innate or develop as a result of other conditions. Symptoms often include easy bruising, prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, spontaneous nosebleeds or gum bleeding, and, in severe instances, may lead to heavy or prolonged periods in women and blood in urine or stools. Despite being less common, a rash of tiny red spots caused by bleeding into the skin might also occur. Complications may include internal bleeding and issues related to the health of bone marrow. The condition can be diagnosed through blood tests and bone marrow examination if necessary.
