D50-D53: Nutritional anaemias

D52: Folate deficiency anaemia

Folate deficiency anaemia is a condition under a group of disorders caused by a lack of folate, an essential vitamin needed by the body for the production and maintenance of cells, particularly red blood cells. It primarily affects the circulatory or blood system. Folate, also known as vitamin B9, can be found in various food sources like lentils, leafy green vegetables and fortified cereals. The deficiency occurs when the body's intake of folate is insufficient to meet its needs, which can be due to poor diet, problems with absorption in the digestive system, or increased requirements like in pregnancy. Common symptoms include fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, and a fast or irregular heartbeat. These symptoms manifest as the body struggles to produce enough red blood cells to meet its oxygen carrying needs. Over time, without sufficient red blood cells, the condition can progress to a more severe form of anemia and other health problems.
