D46.6: Myelodysplastic syndrome with isolated del(5q) chromosomal abnormality

Myelodysplastic syndrome with isolated del(5q) chromosomal abnormality (D46.6) is a specific type of blood cell disorder. This condition develops when there's an abnormality in the 5th chromosome, specifically, a deletion (abbreviated as "del") in the long arm (q) of the chromosome. The abnormality often affects your body's ability to produce healthy blood cells. As a result, you may experience fatigue due to anemia (low red blood cell counts), frequent infections due to leukopenia (low white blood cell counts), and easy bruising or bleeding due to thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts). This condition is typically slow to progress and can lead to a type of cancer called acute myeloid leukemia in some cases. Environmental factors like exposure to certain chemicals or radiation may increase your risk, although the exact cause remains unknown.
