D46: Myelodysplastic syndromes
D46.5: Refractory anaemia with multi-lineage dysplasia
Refractory anemia with multi-lineage dysplasia (RCMD) is a type of blood disorder, more specifically categorized under myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). In this illness, the bone marrow (the spongy tissue inside your bones where blood cells are made) produces blood cells that are abnormal or ‘dysplastic’. These cells are not fully developed and cannot function properly. It's called ‘refractory’ because the anemia does not respond to iron supplements or vitamins. You may experience symptoms like fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, or pale skin due to this anemia. RCMD also involves more than one lineage of blood cells, which means that multiple types of blood cells (red cells, white cells, and/or platelets) may be affected. This condition typically gets worse over time, but the rate of progression varies greatly from person to person.
