D27: Benign neoplasm of ovary

When there is abnormal growth of tissue in an organ, then this is referred to as a tumor. The tissue in the body is made up of cells. A tumor disorder involves the cells multiplying more than normal. This results in abnormal or excess tissue forming. A tumor can be benign or malignant. Benign tumors do not destroy the healthy tissue and do not spread throughout the body.

The ovaries are part of the female genitals. There are two ovaries, one on each side. The ovaries sit low down in the abdomen. Egg cells mature in the ovaries. The egg cells can later develop into a child. The ovaries also produce various messenger substances.

With a tumor in the ovaries you often don’t notice any symptoms to begin with. However, you may have abdominal pain, for example.
