C88: Malignant immunoproliferative diseases
C88.3: Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease
Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (IPSID) is a rare medical condition that primarily affects your small intestine. This disease is characterized by the overgrowth of certain white blood cells, leading to malabsorption and causing symptoms such as diarrhea, severe weight loss, and abdominal pain. It usually affects young adults and is more common in certain parts of the world such as the Mediterranean and Middle East. While the exact cause is not known, it is believed to be linked to prolonged exposure to certain bacterial infections in the intestine. With time, IPSID can progress and may cause significant damage to the intestine. Additionally, people with this condition have an increased risk of developing lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the immune system.
