C88: Malignant immunoproliferative diseases

C88.2: Other heavy chain disease

Heavy chain disease is a rare type of blood disorder that impacts the immune system. It is named such since it impacts the heavy chains, which are parts of antibodies that our body creates to fight against diseases. In this condition, abnormal heavy chains are produced, which cannot properly form functional antibodies, making it harder for the immune system to keep us healthy. There are different types of heavy chain diseases, and "Other heavy chain disease," refers to types that don't fall into the commonly categorized Gamma, Alpha, or Mu types. Symptoms vary greatly based on the specific type and its severity, but can include fatigue, weight loss, and enlarged lymph nodes. The disease typically progresses slowly and affects adults rather than children. It is not contagious and its exact cause remains unknown.
