C00-C14: Malignant neoplasms of lip, oral cavity and pharynx

C09: Malignant neoplasm of tonsil

Malignant neoplasm of the tonsil refers to a cancerous growth that originates in the tonsils, which are the two oval-shaped pads at the back of your throat. The condition is part of a larger group of diseases known as head and neck cancers. Being part of the lymphatic system, tonsils act as a defense mechanism, helping to prevent infection by trapping bacteria and viruses which you breathe in or swallow. Malignancies in this area can disrupt this function and cause symptoms such as a persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing and ear pain. As the disease progresses, it may also result in weight loss, frequent coughing, and bad breath. While specific causes aren't completely understood, common risk factors include tobacco and alcohol use, chronic irritation, and exposure to the human papillomavirus (HPV).
