B88.1: Tungiasis [sandflea infestation]
Sandflies are parasites. Parasites are small creatures that, at least for periods of time, live off other creatures. In humans they can cause illnesses.
Sandflies occur in tropical and sub-tropical countries in the Caribbean, South America, Africa and Asia. You can become infected by walking barefoot on the beach, for example.
Sandflies typically bore the front half of their body into the skin on the foot. Within 1 to 2 days the skin around the affected site swells up. A black spot may be visible in the center. The skin may also be very itchy.
