Mites are parasites. Parasites are small creatures that, at least for periods of time, live off other creatures. In humans they can cause illnesses.
There are different species of mite that usually infect animals. You can get mites by coming into contact with infected birds or other animals. Mites can also occur on plants. Mites can get onto the skin if you touch straw or seeds, for example.
A mite infection can cause the skin to turn red. Itchy bumps may also form.
