B85-B89: Pediculosis, acariasis and other infestations

Pediculosis, acariasis, and other infestations refer to a group of conditions caused by tiny creatures commonly known as lice, mites, and other similar organisms. These creatures live on or in the human skin or hair and feed on human blood or dead skin. Transmission usually happens via direct contact with an infested person or indirect contact with clothing, bedding, or furniture used by an infested person. Common symptoms for these conditions often include intense itching, red or inflamed skin, and the presence of tiny crawling or embedded insects. Progression of these conditions can lead to secondary bacterial infections due to frequent scratching. Infestations can affect anyone, but individuals living in close quarters, like households with multiple residents or care facilities, are most susceptible. Despite the discomfort, these conditions do not typically cause serious health problems. Proper hygiene practices help in managing and controlling infestations.
