B65-B83: Helminthiases

B78: Strongyloidiasis

Strongyloidiasis is a disease caused by infection with a type of parasitic roundworm known as Strongyloides stercoralis. These parasites live primarily in warm, moist soil, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. People typically become infected when their skin comes into contact with contaminated soil; the worm can penetrate the skin and travel through the bloodstream to the intestines, where it multiplies. The infection can proceed without symptoms for many years, but some individuals may experience digestive issues, skin rash, or respiratory problems. More serious complications can occur if the immune system weakens and allows the worm to spread to other parts of the body. The disease affects primarily the body's digestive and pulmonary systems and, in rare cases, can become life-threatening.
