B77: Ascariasis
Ascariasis is a type of infection caused by a parasitic roundworm called Ascaris lumbricoides. It is a common condition worldwide, especially in areas with poor sanitation. This intestinal worm infects people when they accidentally ingest soil or objects containing its eggs. Ther are usually no symptoms during the early stage of infection, as the worms are in their larval state. As the disease progresses and the worms mature, symptoms may include stomach pain, fever, vomiting, and, in severe cases, worm infestations can cause serious complications such as malnutrition and obstruction of intestines. Children are particularly vulnerable to these complications because of their smaller body size. The disease primarily affects the digestive system, but it can also impact other organs since the worms can migrate to various parts of the body.
