B65-B83: Helminthiases

B73: Onchocerciasis

Onchocerciasis is a disease mainly found in tropical parts of Africa and South America. The disease is caused by certain threadworms. The threadworms can be transmitted to humans via black flies.

The threadworms can then live in the connective tissue, for example beneath the skin, for a long time. They cluster there to form bumps. The threadworms create larvae that can spread further through the body. With this disease, the skin may change in different ways. It can itch, swell up or become discolored, for example.

If the larvae spread to the eyes, they can inflame the eyes and the cornea may become opaque. The eyes can be so badly damaged that the person goes blind. This disease is then also known as river blindness.
