B50-B64: Protozoal diseases

B52: Plasmodium malariae malaria

Plasmodium malariae malaria is a type of malaria caused by the Plasmodium malariae parasite. This disease is typically transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. After entering the bloodstream, the parasite begins to infect red blood cells, leading to the common symptoms of malaria. These may include high fever, chills, headaches, and nausea. In contrast to some other types of malaria, Plasmodium malariae malaria often has a longer cycle of recurrence, with episodes typically occurring every 72 hours. The disease primarily affects the circulatory system, but can also impact the liver. Although it's generally less severe than other forms of malaria, it may lead to complications if left untreated. While any individual can contract the disease, those living in or traveling to tropical areas where mosquitoes are prevalent are at a higher risk.
