B35-B49: Mycoses

B46: Zygomycosis

Zygomycosis, also known as mucormycosis, is a term that encompasses several serious fungal infections caused by molds called zygomycetes. Most commonly, these molds are found in soil and decaying organic matter, such as leaves, compost piles, or rotting wood. Though relatively rare, these infections often occur when the spores of the mold are inhaled or enter the body through a cut or burn. People with weakened immune systems, such as those with uncontrolled diabetes, are especially susceptible. Zygomycosis can affect the sinuses, the lungs, the skin and soft tissues, or, in more serious cases, the brain. Symptoms depend on where in the body the infection is, but may include fever, cough, nasal congestion, facial pain or swelling, skin ulcers, and blackened tissue. It's important to know that zygomycosis can progress rapidly and can be serious, even life-threatening, particularly if it spreads to the brain.
