B42: Sporotrichosis

B42.7: Disseminated sporotrichosis

Disseminated sporotrichosis is a severe form of a fungal infection caused by the Sporothrix Schenckii fungus. It is relatively rare and occurs when the fungus spreads from the initial site of infection to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. This disease primarily affects the skin, but can also involve other organs like the lungs, bones, and even the nervous system. Transmission of the fungus often occurs through cuts or wounds on the skin that come into contact with the fungus in the environment. Symptoms vary greatly depending on which organs are involved, but can include skin lesions, cough, bone pain, or neurological problems. The disease often progresses slowly, potentially leading to severe complications if not treated in time. Although sporotrichosis can occur in anyone, it is most often seen in those with compromised immune systems, such as people with HIV/AIDS or those on certain medications.
