B33: Other viral diseases, not elsewhere classified

B33.4: Hantavirus (cardio-)pulmonary syndrome [HPS] [HCPS]

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and Hantavirus Cardio-Pulmonary Syndrome (HCPS) are severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory diseases caused by infection with Hantaviruses. The infection primarily spreads via inhalation of airborne particles from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva that contain the virus. Early symptoms typically appear within 1-5 weeks after exposure, and may resemble those of a common flu, including fatigue, fever, and muscle aches. These early signs are often followed by more serious symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath due to fluid-filled lungs, and reduced heart efficiency, showing the affectation of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. As the condition progresses, it can lead to severe respiratory distress and even cardiogenic shock. It's important to note, this is a rare disease but can become severe or life-threatening if not recognized and managed properly.
