Mpox is caused by viruses. The viruses can occur in rodents. You can get infected via the bodily fluids of an infected animal. You can also get infected via the skin of an infected person. You can also catch the infection from objects. The virus can also be transmitted during sex.
Early in the illness you may have fever, with headaches and muscle pains. The lymph nodes in the groin can become enlarged.
Lesions may form in the mucous membrane of the rectum and the external genital organs. The mucous membrane of the mouth and the conjunctiva of the eye can also be affected. Smallpox typically appears as bumps on the skin. Over time the bumps develop into pus-filled blisters. The blisters then heal and may leave scars behind.
