A96.1: Machupo haemorrhagic fever
Machupo viruses occur in Bolivia. They can cause Bolivian hemorrhagic fever. You can get infected by coming into contact with the bodily fluids of mice. The viruses can also be absorbed by unwashed food or breathed in as dust.
These viruses typically cause hemorrhaging. This may involve bloody spots on the skin, for example. You may also have fever and soreness in your limbs. In severe cases you may also suffer seizures and lose consciousness.
