A92: Other mosquito-borne viral fevers
A92.5: Zika virus disease
Zika virus disease is a medical condition that is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These mosquitoes are more commonly seen during the daytime. The Zika virus can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus, leading to serious birth defects. Sexual transmission of the virus is also possible from an infected person to their partner. Symptoms, often appearing several days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, typically include mild fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle pain, and joint discomfort, but many infected individuals may not have noticeable symptoms. The disease does not usually result in death, but the symptoms can be severe enough to require hospitalization. This disease particularly affects the neurological system, as it can cause neurological disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults and microcephaly in newborns.
