A69.1: Other Vincent infections
The inflammation is caused by specific bacteria. Various areas in the mouth and throat can be affected by the inflammation. For example, sometimes the gums or tonsils are inflamed.
During the disease, the mucous membranes are often reddened and irritated. Swallowing in particular can be painful. With a severe inflammation, nearby tissue can be damaged. In that case, you may be seriously ill.
