A44.0: Systemic bartonellosis
There are various kinds of pathogens. You have been infected with particular bacteria of the bartonella group. These bacteria are transmitted by sand flies. The disease occurs in South America especially.
If you are infected with the bacteria, the symptoms usually occur after several days. A high fever and limb pain are common with the disease. The bacteria multiply in the red blood cells and destroy these. This may result in you having too few red blood cells. For example, you may then be very pale or weak. The disease can make you very severely ill. Sometimes you may get a rash on the skin or mucous membranes some time later. The affected sites usually look like warts. Sometimes lumps may also form under the skin.
