A22: Anthrax

A22.2: Gastrointestinal anthrax

Anthrax pathogens are specific bacteria. These bacteria are transmitted to humans from animals such as cattle, sheep or pigs, for example.

If you eat the meat of sick animals, you may develop gastrointestinal anthrax. Gastrointestinal anthrax can be a very serious illness. First you can get abdominal pain and feel nauseous. If the intestines are inflamed further, you may get a high fever, severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea.
