A06.5: Amoebic lung abscess
Amebae are pathogens that occur especially in the Earth’s warm regions. You can be infected with amebae via contaminated foods or drinks. If you are infected, the symptoms usually only occur after several days. Amebae often cause inflammation of the intestines. They can then cause diarrhea.
The amebae can get into the lungs and form cavities that are full of dead cells. This may for instance result in coughing up blood. A feeling of weakness is common. The amebae can also spread into the surrounding area. In that case, you may be seriously ill.
