A06.4: Amoebic liver abscess
Amebae are pathogens that occur especially in the Earth’s warm regions. You can be infected with amebae via contaminated foods or drinks. If you are infected, the symptoms usually only occur after several days. Amebae often cause inflammation of the intestines. They can then cause diarrhea.
The amebae can get into the blood through the intestines and thus move into the liver. The liver is an important organ on the top right of the abdomen. For example, it helps with blood clotting and detoxifying the body. Nutrients from food are processed in the liver. Amebae in the liver may cause one or several cavities filled with dead cells to develop.
Due to this kind of cavity in the liver, pain in the upper abdomen and fever are common. The liver may no longer be able to perform its tasks. The amebae can also spread into the surrounding organs. In that case, you may be seriously ill.
