A06: Amoebiasis

A06.1: Chronic intestinal amoebiasis

Amebae are pathogens that occur especially in the Earth’s warm regions. You can be infected with amebae via contaminated foods or drinks. If you are infected, the symptoms usually only occur after several days. The amebae damage the mucous membranes in the intestines. This results in inflammation of the intestines.

Inflammation of the intestines commonly causes diarrhea. The diarrhea is often bloody and mucous. Furthermore, you may have abdominal pain, pain during bowel movements and a fever.

If the intestines are inflamed for a considerable time, the symptoms can recur. In the meantime, there are usually times when you have no symptoms.
