A01: Typhoid and paratyphoid fevers
A01.4: Paratyphoid fever, unspecified
Paratyphoid fever is caused by certain bacteria. These bacteria are part of the salmonella group. There are many different types of salmonella. These bacteria only occur in humans. Paratyphoid fever is usually transmitted through contaminated water or food. The disease occurs primarily in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia.
Paratyphoid fever usually begins with headaches and limb pain. This disease causes a high fever, usually without shivering. The fever remains high for several days. Abdominal pain is another common symptom of the disease. You may have constipation initially. Then later there will be diarrhea that can cause a lot of fluid to be lost. Furthermore, it is common to feel weak and tired. There may also be confusion. But the symptoms can also be moderate.
It is possible to infect other people for several weeks after the illness due to the bacteria being passed in stools.
